What is Couples Therapy
Couples therapy is a form of therapy where an individual and their partner meet with a therapist to discuss the difficulties they are experiencing in the relationship, communication patterns or struggles, and develop ways to make changes that have the potential to improve the relationship.
The goal of couples therapy is for couples to better understand how past experiences have created difficulties in the relationship and break away from these patterns of thought and behavior and past patterns of blame, avoidance, and defensiveness, to then focus on learning more effective and respectful ways of communication and interaction.
Our therapists work with a variety of couples in traditional and non-traditional relationships with diverse backgrounds (i.e., gay couples, interracial, inter-ethnic, interreligious) at various stages of the relationship (i.e., dating, premarital, marital, separated, divorced).
what problems can be addressed in couples therapy?
There are a variety of issues and relational problems that can be addressed in couples therapy, including parenting issues, family conflict, couple relationship dissatisfaction, substance abuse, infidelity, medical issues, intimate partner violence, general mental health issues in a partner, among others.
